Always desperate for money, she's unscrupulous about how she gets it. The war's thrown up all manner of new opportunities but what Vee needs is a cool head and the ability to make a plan. On her own, she's a disaster. With Noel, she's a team. Together they cook up an idea. But there are plenty of other people making money out of the war and some of them are dangerous. Noel may have been moved to safety, but he isn't actually safe at all . . .

Crooked Heart is a novel that has been on my wish list for almost a year now, but unfortunately I just hadn't gotten around to buying it for myself. When lovereading.co.uk offered me the chance to read a review copy prior to the paperback release, I (almost literally) jumped at the chance.

Crooked Heart is the tale of an unlikely friendship between wartime evacuee Noel Bostock and single mother Vee Sedge.

Noel has been plucked from his unhappy home with his smothering Aunt and Uncle in London and sent to St.Albans as a evacuee.

Vee Sedge, always looking to make money, sees an opportunity in Noel when she sees him limping along with the other evacuees looking for residence.

She agrees to take him in and at first their relationship is strained.

Noel is unhappy, and misses his previous guardian his Godmother Mattie. In time he begins to warm to Vee and her money making escapades and begins to help her.

Meanwhile her son Donald, is up to all sorts, following in his Mothers money making footsteps.

Crooked Heart is a wonderful, funny, tale of friendship, love and loss and never shys away from the brutality of war.

Crooked Heart by Lissa Evans is available from 31 December 2015.
You can pre-order it now from Amazon online and Black Swan.
